About
About Cádiz
Cádiz is a city in Spain and the capital of the province of Cádiz in the autonomous community of Andalusia. It is located in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula off the Atlantic Ocean separated from neighbouring San Fernando by a narrow isthmus.
Cádiz occupies a sandy island 7 km long in the shape of a thigh bone (a left one to be precise), nowadays connected to the Spanish mainland by road and railways. There’s been a settlement here since the 7th century BC, when the Phoenicians called it Gadir, meaning a stronghold - they gave the same name to Agadir in Morocco and other outposts. Something big enough to be dubbed a city appeared between 1100 and 900 BC, concentrated around the harbour at the northeast end and the narrow isthmus just behind.

Comfortable means average daytime high between 18 °C and 29 °C and under 80 mm of rain in the month. Local knowledge
Eating, drinking and staying safe in Cádiz
Eat
Fish and shellfish is the main offering. Cook them simply: plain boiled shellfish (from tiny prawns to lobsters), grilled or baked whole fish such as lubina (bass) or dorada (bream), or deep fried with a light flour coating especially for puntillitas (baby squid) or boquerones (anchovies).
Drink
Wine from other parts of Spain is plentiful, but local vineyards are designed for sherry production. Their white wine Barbadillo is pleasant but their red is low quality. Fino or manzanilla are the usual types of sherry, taken as an aperitif rather than after a meal.
