About
About Chiba
Chiba is the capital city of Chiba Prefecture, Japan. It sits about 40 kilometres (25 mi) east of the centre of Tokyo on Tokyo Bay.
Alas, Gibson's dystopian cyberpunk visions are difficult to correlate with the reality of modern-day Chiba, which is mostly an unremarkable suburban city notably lacking in "techno-criminal subcultures". Still, the area still makes a reasonably interesting day trip from Tokyo if you have time to spare and prefer high technology toys over mouldering temples, and Oyumino has some nature trails for a spot of hiking. The local tourist association has a Japanese-only guide site.

When to go
The best time to visit Chiba
Chiba has no month that is both mild and dry by the measure used here. August is the warmest month, with average highs of 30 °C; October is the wettest, with about 200 mm of rain.
Comfortable means average daytime high between 18 °C and 29 °C and under 80 mm of rain in the month. Averages for 1991–2020 over the surrounding area, a grid square about 50 km across, so a coast or a nearby mountain can make the town itself warmer or cooler. Getting there
Getting to Chiba: airports and arrival
The nearest airport with scheduled flights is Tokyo Haneda International Airport (HND), about 30 km from the city centre in a straight line; Narita International Airport (NRT, 31 km) and Ibaraki Airport (IBR, 70 km) are also within reach.
Getting in
The JR Narita Line links Chiba directly to Narita International Airport (NRT). Roughly one N'EX limited express per hour stops at Chiba (29 min, ¥1,972) on its way to Tokyo, but ordinary rapid service trains run every 15 min or so, cost a third of the price (¥682) and aren't that much slower at 48 minutes. From Haneda International Airport, your best bet is the Limousine Bus, which takes about an hour to Chiba station (subject to traffic), run every 30 min or so and cost ¥1,300. Train is the obvious means of arrival, as a dense web of routes links Chiba to Tokyo and points in the vicinity.
Getting around
The two lines of the suspended Chiba Urban Monorail (千葉都市モノレール), the world's longest suspended monorail, are an attraction in themselves, connecting the port (千葉みなと Chiba Minato) to Chiba station and then branching out to the northwest and northeast. The Chiba Urban Monorail is a suspended system where trains hang from the track above. It offers a unique aerial view of the city streets and is a convenient way to reach key locations like Chiba Port Tower.
