Ciudad Obregón is a city in southern Sonora. It is the state's second largest city after Hermosillo and serves as the municipal seat of Cajeme.

Ciudad Obregón is the agricultural capital and the second largest city in the state of Sonora, with a population of around 450,000 people. Less than 100 years old it is a young, modern and vibrant city providing all the services you would expect from a city.

The nearest airport with scheduled flights is Ciudad Obregón International Airport (CEN), about 15 km from the city centre in a straight line; General José María Yáñez International Airport (GYM, 111 km) is also within reach.

Getting in

Ciudad Obregón has its own international airport which receives flights from most major Mexican cities and from Tucson, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. If you are travelling from most European destinations, your flight will probably involve a transfer from Mexico City Airport to Ciudad Obregon using Aeromexico Connect, who provides four daily flights between Mexico City and Ciudad Obregón. The Federal Highway 15 passes through the centre of Ciudad Obregon and is the main road that runs from the Nogales Mexican border all the way to Mexico City.

Getting around

The public bus services in Ciudad Obregón are very well organised. The most popular company ‘SUBA’ operate new air-conditioned buses and provide services to most destinations within the city and for less than M$15 (pesos) (one-way); they provide a very comfortable and cost effective solution for getting around. There are several car rental companies in Ciudad Obregón, including international companies such has Hertz. Car hire prices tend to be similar to what you would expect to pay in America and Europe and usually include insurance.

Eating, drinking and staying safe in Ciudad Obregón

Eat

The best thing is to eat beef in all its varieties: tacos, cuts, machaca, jerky and in burritos. The quintessential sweet snacks are coyotas. It also has excellent seafood which you can enjoy in the Paredón, which is an estuary. And the other option is to eat bass and its derivatives in the Oviachic Dam, in addition to having an excellent view of the desert and the dam.
