About
About Erfurt
Erfurt is the capital and largest city of the Central German state of Thuringia, with a population of around 216,000.
Erfurt's wealth was built on its strategic location at the intersection of major trade routes, most notably the Via Regia. During the Middle Ages, the city became a powerhouse through the trade of woad, a plant used to produce blue dye. This "blue gold" financed the city's monumental architecture, including Europe's longest inhabited bridge, the Krämerbrücke, and the stunning ensemble of the Cathedral and St. Severus Church. Known as the "Thuringian Rome" for its many spires, Erfurt has long been an intellectual center.
