About Gulu City
The city has a population of 233,271 and Acholi is the dominant language spoken alongside English. Gulu carries a history of the 1990s to 2000s Lord Resistance Army war and is on its post-conflict recovery, peacebuilding and reconciliation journey as of 2026. As violence related to the LRA rebel groups has diminished, more NGO workers and travellers have settled in, and generally friendly local business owners are finding ways to cater to the increasing demand for hotels and restaurants.
