Karaganda or Karagandy is a major city in central Kazakhstan and the capital of the Karaganda Region. It is the fifth-most populous city in the country, with a population of 497,777 as of the 2020 Census, marking an increase from 459,778 in 2009 and 436,864 in 1999.

The nearest airport with scheduled flights is Sary-Arka Airport (KGF), about 21 km from the city centre in a straight line.

Getting in

By plane: Sary-Arka airport (KGF), 15 km southeast of the city, has regular flights from Almaty, Moscow SVO, Novosibirsk, Kyzylorda and Ust-Kamenogorsk. Astana is too close to fly. By train: Karaganda is on the main line between Astana (4 hr) and Almaty (11 hr), with six trains a day. See Kazakhstan for ticket options. By bus: buses ply frequently to Astana, some continuing to Petropavlovsk and Novosibirsk. The bus & railway stations are side-by-side at the south end of city centre.
