About
About Kharagpur
Kharagpur is a semi-planned urban agglomeration and a major industrial city in the Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal, India. It is the headquarters of the Kharagpur subdivision and the largest city of the district.
Kharagpur was once a part of the Hijli Kingdom and ruled by Odia rulers under the Gajapati dynasty. Till 1886, the Hijli Kingdom covered parts of present-day West Bengal and Odisha. The British initially developed Kharagpur as a railway town, with its railway junction serving different parts of present-day West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha. The nearby Hijli was once home to a detention camp to imprison Indian independence activists.
