About

About Liaocheng

Liaocheng (Chinese: 聊城; pinyin: Liáochéng) is a prefecture-level city in western Shandong province, China. It borders the provincial capital of Jinan to the southeast, Dezhou to the northeast, Tai'an to the south, and the provinces of Hebei and Henan to the west.

Historically, Liaocheng was an important commercial port along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it was one of the nine major commercial ports along the Grand Canal, known as the "throat of the canal and the elbow of the heavenly capital". This city is also famous for many stories from classical novels such as Water Margin and Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio that take place here. Liaocheng is known for its unique water city style.

Eat

Liaocheng's culinary culture is part of the Shandong (Lu) cuisine tradition. Historically, the Grand Canal brought merchants from various parts of China; this contributed to a mix of northern and southern culinary traditions in the local cuisine. Liaocheng is located in northern China, so noodles, pancakes, Mantou and other pasta are very common. The local breakfast includes old tofu, soup dishes, and Shazhen Guada. Freshwater fish from Dongchang Lake are also commonly used for local cooking. In addition, Dong'e County under the jurisdiction of Liaocheng produces ass hide glue, which is a kind of traditional gelatin food made from donkey skin. It can be eaten directly or used to make drinks.
