About
About New Taipei City
New Taipei City is a special municipality located in northern Taiwan. The city is home to an estimated population of 4,004,367 as of January 2023, making it the most populous city in Taiwan, and the second largest special municipality by area, behind Kaohsiung.
New Taipei is basically suburban Taipei and is the home of more than 3,500,000 people. It used to be known as Taipei County (臺北縣 Táiběi Xiàn), but was re-named New Taipei City in 2010 after its population exceeded 2 million, the legal population limit for county status. The city has quite a diverse environment, from the densely populated industrial districts of Sanchong and Shulin to the coastal regions around the district of Tamsui and the sparsely populated mountain districts near Shenkeng.
