São João de Meriti is a Brazilian municipality in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Its historical name was São João do Rio Meriti.
São João de Meriti is one of the largest municipalities of the region of Baixada Fluminense. It has the highest demographic density in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and the second highest in Brazil. The municipality has two main nucleus, where most economic activity is concentrated: Downtown São João de Meriti and the neighborhood of Vilar dos Teles; the latter is also where the municipal administrative headquarters is located.

Although no subway lines enter the municipality of São João de Meriti, many people use the subway Line 2 to go to this municipality, since its final station is located in Pavuna (a neighborhood in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro), just a few meters from the Rio de Janeiro-São João de Meriti municipal boundary and the São João city center.
