About

About Ulhasnagar

Ulhasnagar is a city located 26 km from Thane City in Thane district, Maharashtra, India. This city is a part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region managed by the MMRDA.

Ulhasnagar was established in the years after the 1947 Partition of India as a resettlement town for Sindhi Hindu refugees who fled Sindh province (now in Pakistan). It was built as a military camp, and was renamed Ulhasnagar (after the nearby Ulhas river) after independence and grew rapidly into a self-contained township centered on trade, textiles, and small-scale manufacturing. Today the city is one of the largest Sindhi communities anywhere in the world, and remains closely associated with Sindhi language, cuisine, and refugee heritage.
