About Yan'an
Yan'an is a prefecture-level city in the Shaanbei region of Shaanxi province, China, bordering Shanxi to the east and Gansu to the west. It administers several counties, including Zhidan (formerly Bao'an), which served as the headquarters of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) before the city of Yan'an proper took that role.
Yan'an is a major center of "red tourism" in China. Sites such as the Yan'an Revolution Memorial attract Chinese citizens and Communist Party cadres seeking to learn more about the Party's history. The city is regarded as the "cradle of the Chinese Revolution" because it became the Communists' main base after the Long March. For those interested in Chinese communist history, it is often considered the second most important pilgrimage site after Chairman Mao's birthplace in Shaoshan.
