About
About Carlisle
Carlisle ( kar-LYLE, locally KAR-lyle; from the Cumbric: Caer Luel) is a city located in the Cumberland district of Cumbria, England. It is the largest settlement and only city in Cumbria.
Caer Liwelyδ means the fortress of Luel or Luguwalion. It was a Roman garrison town from about 72 AD, and when they left after 300 years it was contested between petty kingdoms such as Strathclyde, Northumbria and Rheged. The Scots were holding it when the Normans arrived, but in 1092 William Rufus captured it for England and built the castle and city walls, which resisted re-capture by Scotland except for a brief Jacobite occupation in 1745. Between the organised military campaigns was continual banditry by the infamous Border Reivers.

When to go
The best time to visit Carlisle
Carlisle has no month that is both mild and dry by the measure used here. July is the warmest month, with average highs of 19 °C; October is the wettest, with about 161 mm of rain.
Comfortable means average daytime high between 18 °C and 29 °C and under 80 mm of rain in the month. Averages for 1991–2020 over the surrounding area, a grid square about 50 km across, so a coast or a nearby mountain can make the town itself warmer or cooler. Getting there
Getting to Carlisle: airports and arrival
The nearest airport with scheduled flights is Newcastle International Airport (NCL), about 81 km from the city centre in a straight line; Teesside International Airport (MME, 106 km) and Edinburgh Airport (EDI, 121 km) are also within reach.
Getting in
Manchester Airport (MAN) is usually best choice for its global connections and competitive fares. An hourly direct train from the airport takes two hours to Carlisle and continues to Glasgow. Newcastle upon Tyne (NCL) and Glasgow (GLA) airports are reasonable alternatives. Carlisle Lake District Airport (CAX) has air freight, aircraft maintenance and private light aviation but no commercial flights. From time to time there's upbeat talk of relaunching these, but the list of flopped ventures is longer than the list of destinations ever served.
Getting around
Most sights are within walking distance of the centre. Stagecoach Bus 93 follows the route of Hadrian's Wall west of town, running 2-3 times a day to Glasson, Port Carlisle, Bowness-on-Solway, Anthorn and Kilbride. A dozen taxi firms ply the town and nearby countryside. Car hire is available from Glenrental, Europcar, Budget, Avis and Enterprise.
