About
About Epsom
Epsom is a town in the borough of Epsom and Ewell in Surrey, England, about 14 miles (22 kilometres) south of central London. The town is first recorded as Ebesham in the 10th century and its name probably derives from that of a Saxon landowner.
The compact borough of Epsom and Ewell is mainly residential. Some office space and light industry form a corridor between Epsom town centre and the village of Ewell. East Street in Epsom runs through the heart of this commercial district. The town centre is dominated by the Ashley Centre shopping mall, which contains typical chain outlets such as Boots, H&M, Marks & Spencer, Monsoon, Next, Waitrose and WH Smith. Epsom borders Reigate and Banstead at Epsom Downs. The Downs are an upland chalk ridge marked by steep slopes rising from the south.

When to go
The best time to visit Epsom
The most comfortable months for a city stay in Epsom are June to September. July is the warmest month, with average highs of 23 °C; October is the wettest, with about 81 mm of rain.
Comfortable means average daytime high between 18 °C and 29 °C and under 80 mm of rain in the month. Averages for 1991–2020 over the surrounding area, a grid square about 50 km across, so a coast or a nearby mountain can make the town itself warmer or cooler. Getting there
Getting to Epsom: airports and arrival
The nearest airport with scheduled flights is London Heathrow Airport (LHR), about 20 km from the city centre in a straight line; London Gatwick Airport (LGW, 22 km) and London City Airport (LCY, 29 km) are also within reach.
Getting in
Epsom lies just to the southwest of London Metropolitan Area, but inside the M25 orbital motorway. The shortest main road between central London and Epsom is the A3, starting at London Bridge, switching to the A24 at Clapham Common, through to Epsom town centre. The A24 makes barely any diversion from the SSW compass point. Between London and Epsom this Roman route (built c. 100 AD) cannot be widened because of 19th and later 20th century urbanisation and it hasn't been bypassed except for two short sections around Merton High Street and Ewell village centre.
Getting around
Much of the town centre can easily be covered on foot. Public transport options from the centre up to Epsom Downs, or out to Ewell Village, consist of a reasonable bus network. Timetables can be found here. You can also travel by bus to Leatherhead, Sutton, or Kingston upon Thames.

Eating, drinking and staying safe in Epsom
Eat
There are many chain restaurants in the centre of town, but on Epsom Downs, by the racecourse, there are two pubs which provide good food at reasonable prices. Both can get very busy, particularly at weekends.
Drink
Epsom is not overwhelmed with charming places to drink, particularly in the centre. However, there are a few pubs of interest within 10–15 minutes walk of the station.
