About Poole

Poole ( ) is a coastal town, seaport on the south coast of England and civil parish in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole unitary authority area in Dorset, England. The town is 21 miles (34 km) east of Dorchester and adjoins Bournemouth to the east.

The town has cross-Channel freight and passenger ferry services, which connect with the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey, as well as the French port town of Saint-Malo, Brittany. In 2016, it was home to around 150,000 people.

The nearest airport with scheduled flights is Bournemouth Airport (BOH), about 12 km from the city centre in a straight line; Southampton Airport (SOU, 51 km) and Bristol Airport (BRS, 90 km) are also within reach.

Getting in

Poole railway station is about 2½ hr from London Waterloo with 2 trains per hour for most of the day. There are regular, quick and convenient trains on the South West Trains service, but rail fares are generally expensive, so be careful. There are coaches between Poole bus station and London Victoria about once an hour, via Bournemouth. Coaches also run to Heathrow Airport. From the east, take the M27 until it becomes the A31. Continue past Ringwood, and follow the signs for Poole. From the west, come in on the A35.

Getting around

More branded buses cover local routes including the Poole-Parkstone-Westbourne-Bournemouth-Christchurch corridor, to Broadstone and Wimborne, and to Wareham and Swanage. There are a number of local taxi and private hire firms, both large and small. There's a growing network of cycle routes, with bicycles for hire.
